Nicole Richie was born on 21 September 1981 in Berkeley, California, United States to Peter Michael Escovedo and Karen Moss.
When Richie was three years old, her biological parents decided to leave her with the family of Lionel Richie and his first wife, Brenda Harvey Richie, because they could not support her.
At first, Lionel and Brenda Harvey Richie became her guardians, but they legally adopted Nicole when she was nine years old. When Lionel and Brenda went through a bitter public divorce, they took it easy on young Nicole. After the divorce, Lionel remarried and had two more children: Miles and Sofia.

In 2003, Richie and her best friend Paris Hilton starred in the reality series Simple Life, where they spent a month with their family in the rural community of Altus, Arkansas. The series premiered on Fox on December 2, 2003, and garnered 13 million viewers, increasing Fox’s reach among viewers 18–49. The series continued in the second and third seasons. Fox later canceled the show after an argument between Hilton and Richie, but it was aired by E! The fourth season of entertainment television, which garnered almost a million viewers, was followed by a relatively unsuccessful fifth season. Complications arose in the fifth season, with both Richie and Hilton facing major DUI charges and the risk of going to jail. Hilton was sentenced to 23 days in jail, although this occurred after the season was produced. Richie accepted the plea and was again sentenced to four days in jail after production ended.
Despite talks of a sixth season, the series ended at the end of a moderately unsuccessful fifth season. In 2005, Richie made her acting debut in the comedy Kids in America. Richie has made guest appearances in television series such as Eve, Six Feet Under, American Dreams, 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter, and Chuck. Richie appeared as a guest judge in the seventh season premiere of the competition series Project Runway.
In 2012-2013, she judged the reality competition series Fashion Star. In 2014–2015, Richie starred in the unscripted comedy series Candidly Nicole. In 2016, Richie was cast as news anchor Portia Scott-Griffith in the sitcom Great News, created by Tracey Wigfield and produced by Wigfield and Tina Fey. The casting marked Richie’s first regular television series. Speaking about the casting of Richie, Fey noted that she is a “really funny person” with “instant likability” and “good timing without really being pushed.”

It tells about the life of Chloe Parker, the adopted daughter of a famous singer. She goes through all the popular nightclubs and parties in Hollywood while battling drug addiction. In early January 2006, The Truth About Diamonds rose to number 32 on the New York Times bestseller list for hardcover fiction.
Richie’s second novel Priceless was published on 28 September 2010. It tells the story of a girl who loses everything and then learns what is important in life.

Richie made her musical debut in February 2005 with a live performance on ABC’s The View, playing the piano. In 2004, she auditioned for the role of Maureen in the popular Broadway hit Rent, but was not cast. In February 2010, Richie appeared on the charity single “We Are the World 25 for Haiti”.
In September 2013, Richie made a cameo appearance in Christina Aguilera’s “Let There Be Love” music video. Richie announced in April 2020 that she would release a comedy rap album under the name Nikki Fre$h; Confirmed tracks for the album include “Drip Drip”, “The Gem Song” and “Bee’s Tea”.
