He made his debut in first-class cricket during the 2015-2016 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy on 26th October 2015.Later, in the players draft for the 2018 Pakistan Super League, he was chosen to play for the Quetta Gladiators in November 2017.

During the 2017-2018 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, he emerged as the top run-scorer for Pakistan Television, scoring 488 runs in seven matches.[8] Subsequently, he was included in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s squad for the 2018 Pakistan Cup in April 2018. Once again, in the 2018-2019 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, he topped the run-scoring charts for Pakistan Television with 414 runs in five matches.

He earned a spot in Pakistan’s team for the 2018 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in December 2018. Moreover, in March 2019, he was selected in the Federal Areas’ squad for the 2019 Pakistan Cup, followed by being named in Sindh’s squad for the 2019-2020 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy tournament in September 2019. He was entrusted with the captaincy of Pakistan’s squad for the 2019 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Bangladesh in November 2019.

In recognition of his performances, he was shortlisted for the 2020 PCB Awards’ Domestic Cricketer of the Year category in December 2020.His outstanding performances led to his inclusion in Pakistan’s Test squad for their series against South Africa in January 2021, and later for both Test and limited-overs squads for their tours to South Africa and Zimbabwe in March 2021. However, he had to miss the One Day International (ODI) matches against South Africa due to an injury.In June 2021, he was named in Pakistan’s Test and ODI squads for their tours of the West Indies and England, respectively. His ODI debut took place on 8th July 2021, playing for Pakistan against England. Additionally, he was appointed as the captain of the Pakistan Shaheens for their tour of Sri Lanka in October 2021.

Further, he was selected in Pakistan’s Test squad for their series against Bangladesh in November 2021, and again for their series against Australia in February 2022. In June 2022, he was included in Pakistan’s Test squad for their two-match series in Sri Lanka.

His excellent form earned him a spot in Pakistan’s Test series against New Zealand in December 2022. During the second Test on 4th January 2023, he achieved his maiden Test century, significantly contributing to Pakistan’s total of 400+ runs in response to New Zealand’s 449 in the first innings.


Saud Shakeel’s outstanding achievement also earned him the distinction of being the 23rd Pakistani batsman to achieve a double century in Test cricket. Moreover, his exceptional performance has secured him the record for the highest number of runs (788) by a Pakistani batsman in only 11 Test innings.
