Israel Adesanya was born 22 July 1989, is a New Zealand professional mixed martial artist, kickboxer and former boxer who holds multiple championships in all three disciplines. As a mixed martial artist, he currently competes in the middleweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he is a former UFC middleweight champion. In kickboxing, he is a former Glory middleweight title contender.
As of November 14, 2022, he is ranked #1 in the UFC Middleweight Rankings and as of March 21, 2023, he is #5 in the UFC Men’s Pound Sterling Rankings.

Adesanya is an anime fan and has stated that he wants to start an anime production company after retiring from wrestling. His nickname “The Last Stylebender” refers to the anime-inspired comic series Avatar: The Last Airbender. On Adesanya’s arm is a tattooed image of Toph Beifong, one of the main characters of the series.
In September 2020, he became the first mixed martial arts athlete to sign a sponsorship deal with Puma. Adesanya was also signed as an ambassador for Stake.com in January 2021.

Adesanya attended Chrisland School in Opeb and enrolled in its taekwondo after school until his mother withdrew him due to injury.
In 1999, he and his family moved to Ghana for 10 months, but as his parents wanted their children to receive a recognized tertiary education, he settled in Rotorua, New Zealand at the age of 10 and attended Rotorua Boys’ High School. Adesanya had no interest in sports during high school; Instead, he became interested in Japanese anime such as Death Note and the manga series Naruto. Adesanya was bullied during high school and credits the abuse she experienced as the reason she decided to pursue martial arts later in life.
After graduating from high school, Adesanya enrolled at the Universal College of Learning in Whanganui for a Bachelor of Computer Engineering. At the age of 18, he started training in kickboxing after being inspired by the Muay Thai movie Ong-Bak.

In May 2010, Adesanya won the first fight of his seven-fight winning streak, defeating Tim Atonio by unanimous decision. He won his next six fights, fighting almost exclusively Wu Lin Feng in China. His winning streak earned him a spot in the 2014 Kunlun Fight 80 kg tournament held during Kunlun Fight 2. He lost his semi-final match against Simon Marcus by extra round decision. Adesanya later made his Glory debut at Glory 15 when he faced Filip Verlinden. Verlinden won the match by unanimous decision. Two years after their first fight, they had a rematch at Glory of Heroes 3, where Adesanya won by unanimous decision.
Adesanya participated in the King of the Ring Cruiserweights II tournament of the regional circuit in New Zealand. In the quarterfinal, he beat Slava Alexeichik by unanimous decision, in the semifinal he beat Pati Afoa by knockout and won the tournament with a knockout of Jamie Eades.
Glory Middleweight Championship
Adesanya won five of his next six fights, including victories over Yousri Belgaroui and Bogdan Stoica. His loss came at the hands of future GLORY Middleweight champion Alex Pereira, who won by unanimous decision.
Adesanya began his professional boxing career in November 2014 against two-time Australian champion Daniel Ammann. He received one of two wildcards to enter the cruiserweight over 8 boxing tournaments. The event was hosted by Shane Cameron and Kali Meehan at the North Shore Events Center in Auckland, New Zealand. He suffered a controversial unanimous decision loss when he appeared to have the best of Ammann in the quarterfinals.
