Leon Edwards is a Jamaican-born-English professional mixed martial artist. He competes in the Welterweight division in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). In the past, he performed for BAMMA, where he was the BAMMA Welterweight Champion.
Leon Edwards Personal Life
Leon Edwards was born on 25th August 1991 in Kingston, Jamaica. He has a brother named Fabian who is also a mixed martial artist. He used to live with his parents and his brother in a one-room house. He grew up in a residence that was full of crime. When he was 13 years old his father was shot and killed in a nightclub in London.
Leon took part in many criminal activities like drug dealing, street fighting, and knife possession but when he was 17 years old, his mother admitted him to an MMA club which helped him to come out of his lifestyle.
Leon Edwards Career
In 2010, he began his career by making his debut as an amateur at Bushido Challenge 2 – A New Dawn. Later, he signed a contract with Fight UK MMA.
He made his UK MMA debut against Damian Zlotnicki which he won via technical knockout in the first round.
He then joined BAMMA and by his excellent performance in the ring he managed to win the welterweight championship.
On 8th November 2014, he made his UFC debut at UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Saint Preux. He lost his debut match against Cláudio Silva.
He later competed in many matches in UFC. On 16th March 2019, he won a match against Gunnar Nelson at UFC Fight Night 147. After the event, Jorge Masvidal punched Leon backstage which created a laceration under Leon’s left eye.
On 21st March 2020, he was scheduled to fight Tyron Woodley at UFC Fight Night: Woodley vs. Edwards. However, due to Covid-19, he withdrew himself from the match as the match shifted to the United States.
On 20th August 2022, Leon faced Kamaru Usman at UFC 278 for the UFC Welterweight Championship. The fight was won by Leon via knockout in the fifth round and became the UFC Welterweight Championship.
