Zayn has three siblings: an older sister named Doniya, and two younger sisters named Waliyha and Safaa. Despite being raised in an Islamic environment, Zayn no longer considers himself a Muslim. He grew up in the working-class neighborhood of East Bowling, Bradford.
Alik started dating Perrie Edwards, an English singer from the band Little Mix, in December 2011. They got engaged in August 2013 but broke up in August 2015.
Afterwards, Malik entered into an on-again, off-again relationship with American model Gigi Hadid in late 2015. Hadid appeared in Malik’s music video for “Pillowtalk,” and they were featured together on the cover of Vogue in August 2017. In the same year, Hadid photographed them for a Versace campaign. In September 2020, Malik and Hadid welcomed their first child, a daughter. They spent much of their time on a working farm in rural Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where Malik took care of horses and cows. Hadid’s mother, Yolanda, and sister Bella also owned land in the area.
However, their relationship came to an end in October 2021 after Hadid’s mother accused Malik of assaulting her. Malik pleaded no contest to four charges of harassment, with court papers describing incidents of physical pain and mental anguish caused by him. He was sentenced to 360 days of probation and required to complete anger management and domestic violence education programs by a Pennsylvania court.
Growing up in the working-class neighborhood of East Bowling, Bradford, Zayn Malik belonged to a humble family. He attended Lower Fields Primary School and later Tong High School (now Tong Leadership Academy), both located in Bradford. During his teenage years, he pursued his interest in performing arts by taking relevant courses and participating in school productions. Zayn’s musical taste was heavily influenced by his father, who introduced him to urban genres such as R&B, hip hop, and reggae. While in school, he discovered his talent for writing raps and had his first experience singing on stage when singer Jay Sean visited his school. In addition to his artistic pursuits, Zayn also engaged in boxing from the ages of 15 to 17. Prior to embarking on a music career, he initially had aspirations of obtaining a degree in English and becoming an English teacher.
In 2010, a 17-year-old named Malik auditioned for the seventh series of The X Factor in Manchester. Despite his initial reluctance, he sang “Let Me Love You” by Mario and successfully moved forward. Judges Nicole Scherzinger and Simon Cowell saw potential in him and formed a new act with Malik, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson, giving rise to the boy band known as One Direction. The group gained rapid popularity, finishing third in the competition and signing a lucrative recording contract with Syco Records and Columbia Records. One Direction’s journey continued with the release of their licensed book, “One Direction: Forever Young (Our Official X Factor Story),” in February 2011. The band embarked on the X Factor Live Tour, performing for half a million fans across the UK. Their debut studio album, “Up All Night,” released in November 2011 (UK/Ireland) and March 2012 (international), became the first debut album by a UK group to reach number one in the US, with the lead single “What Makes You Beautiful” achieving international success.
In September 2012, One Direction released “Live While We’re Young,” the lead single from their second album, followed by the release of “Take Me Home” in November 2012. The band made chart history by becoming the first boy band with two number-one albums in the same year in the US. They embarked on the successful Take Me Home Tour, grossing $114 million. Their 3D documentary concert film, “One Direction: This Is Us,” was released in August 2013, and their third book, “One Direction: Where We Are: Our Band, Our Story: 100% Official,” was published.
November 2013 saw the release of One Direction’s third studio album, “Midnight Memories,” which became the best-selling album worldwide in 2013. The album’s success continued their streak of number-one debuts on the Billboard 200. The band embarked on the Where We Are Tour in 2014, a highly successful all-stadium tour grossing over $290 million. They released their fourth album, “Four,” in November 2014, which debuted at number one in multiple countries.
However, in March 2015, Malik announced his departure from the band. He cited the desire for a normal life away from the spotlight and dissatisfaction with the band’s musical direction and creative freedom. Malik admitted that he had joined the band on a whim and realized it wasn’t the right fit for him.In 2019, Malik collaborated with Zhavia Ward for a cover version of “A Whole New World” for the Aladdin film remake soundtrack. They also released a bilingual English and Spanish version called “Un Mundo Ideal” with Becky G. Later, Malik teamed up with Aitana for a full Spanish version. He continued his collaborative streak by joining indie pop trio Shaed for a remix of their song “Trampoline” and working with R3hab and Jungleboi on the electropop track “Flames.”
Moving on to his solo releases, on 25 September 2020, Malik dropped “Better” as the lead single from his third studio album, Nobody Is Listening. This marked his return to solo music after a two-year hiatus. Malik expressed that this album was his most personal project up to that point. Additionally, he released “Vibez” alongside the album pre-order on 8 January 2021, and the full album was released on 15 January.
In September 2021, Malik surprised fans by releasing a collection of three songs titled Yellow Tape, which included “Grimez,” “Believe Me,” and “47 11.”

First Interview In Six Years On The Call Her Daddy Podcast
Zayn Malik recently gave his first interview in six years on the Call Her Daddy podcast, where he discussed his departure from One Direction. After staying out of the public eye for a significant period, the 30-year-old artist opened up about his time in the band and his life since then.
Zayn, who is preparing for his music comeback later this month, reflected on the moment he realized it was time to leave the group in 2015. Following his departure, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Liam Payne continued as a foursome for another year before going on hiatus in 2016.
When asked about his decision to leave, Zayn shared, “I’ve had a sense of it for a while.” He further explained, “Without going into too much detail, there were political issues and certain individuals not wanting to sign contracts. So, I had a feeling that something was happening. Additionally, there were underlying friendship issues. Spending every day together for five years took its toll, and we grew tired of one another, to be completely honest. Nevertheless, I now look back on our shared experiences with a much more positive perspective.”
