Early Life and Education
Abdul Kalam was born in a Tamil Muslim family in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, on October 15, 1931. His father was a boat owner and a devout Muslim, while his mother was a homemaker. Kalam’s early life was filled with struggles, and he had to work odd jobs to support his family. Despite facing financial difficulties, he was a diligent student and excelled in his studies. In 1954, Kalam graduated in Physics from St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchirappalli. After graduation, he moved to Madras to study aerospace engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology. Kalam’s interest in aviation and his talent in mathematics and physics led him to pursue a career in aeronautical engineering.
Contributions to India’s Missile Program
Kalam’s contribution to India’s missile program was unparalleled. He played a crucial role in developing India’s first satellite launch vehicle, the SLV-III, and the Agni missile. Kalam’s vision and dedication were instrumental in establishing India’s space research organization, ISRO. He served as the Chief Scientific Adviser to the Prime Minister of India from 1992 to 1999 and was also the Chairman of the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
Under his leadership, the DRDO developed many missile systems, including the Prithvi, Trishul, and Nag. Kalam was also the driving force behind the development of the BrahMos missile, a joint venture between India and Russia. His contributions to India’s missile program have played a significant role in strengthening India’s defense capabilities and enhancing its reputation as a scientific powerhouse.
The People’s President
