Television And Shift To Cinema (2007-2012)

During his college days, Sivakarthikeyan actively participated in various cultural events and showcased his talents in mimicry and stand-up comedy on stage. It was during a three-month break from his studies that his friends encouraged him to audition for Kalakka Povathu Yaaru, a comedy reality show aired on Star Vijay. Initially hesitant, he eventually decided to give it a try and emerged as the winner of the show.

Sivakarthikeyan also appeared in several short films, including Mugapputhagam, Identity, Kurahl 786, and 360°, directed by his friend Atlee. Although he was offered a supporting role in the film Aegan, his portions did not make it to the final cut.

Director Pandiraj approached him with an opportunity to play the lead role in the film Marina, and Sivakarthikeyan eagerly accepted the project. He diligently prepared for his first role, closely following Pandiraj’s instructions and extensively studying the surroundings of Marina Beach. Sivakarthikeyan hoped to showcase his natural talent for humor on the screen. His performance alongside Oviya as a young couple in the film received positive reviews, with one critic noting that the romance added color to the otherwise monochrome film. The reviewer also praised Sivakarthikeyan, stating that the role of Senthilnathan allowed him to be himself, making it an effortless performance.

Before the release of Marina, Aishwarya Dhanush cast him in a supporting role as Dhanush’s friend in the film 3, after being impressed by his work as a host on stage. The film generated significant pre-release buzz and garnered predominantly positive reviews. Critics appreciated Sivakarthikeyan’s contribution in providing comic relief in a serious film. This project marked the beginning of a collaboration with Dhanush, whom Sivakarthikeyan often considers his mentor in the film industry.

He then appeared in Ezhil’s romantic comedy Manam Kothi Paravai, which received mixed reviews but performed decently at the box office. A critic from Behindwoods noted that while the film may not have provided Sivakarthikeyan the ideal platform for lead roles, it did showcase his potential as an actor.

Experimentation In Genres And Success (2013-2019)

In 2013, Sivakarthikeyan had a busy year with three film releases. His first film of the year was Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga, a coming-of-age comedy where he teamed up with director Pandiraj once again. The film was shot in his hometown, Tiruchirappalli, and received positive reviews from critics. It turned out to be a surprise success at the box office, becoming a profitable venture for the producers and distributors.

His next success came with Ethir Neechal, a film produced by Dhanush and written/directed by R. S. Durai Senthilkumar. The story revolved around a young man with a talent for running who aspires to establish his own identity. Sivakarthikeyan’s portrayal was well received, and the film garnered positive reviews.

Sivakarthikeyan’s third release in 2013 was Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam, a comedy directed by Ponram. He played the role of a carefree rural youth alongside Sri Divya, another newcomer. The film received positive reviews, and Sivakarthikeyan’s performance was praised by critics. It was during this film that he sang a song for the first time, and a promotional video showcasing the making of the song was released. The film achieved a milestone of completing 100 days in theaters, becoming Sivakarthikeyan’s biggest commercial success at that time.

His entertaining performances in 2013 earned him the Vijay Award for Entertainer of the Year, a moment he described as memorable.

In 2014, Sivakarthikeyan started the year with the comedy film Maan Karate, produced by AR Murugadoss. The film featured him as a carefree urban youth who pretends to be a boxer to impress a girl.

In 2015, he reunited with director Durai Senthilkumar for the cop action film Kaaki Sattai. He also collaborated once again with his Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam director in the film Rajini Murugan, where he acted alongside Keerthy Suresh.

His subsequent films included Remo, directed by Bakkiyaraj Kannan, where he played the role of a love-struck youth disguised as a female nurse, and Velaikkaran, an action-thriller directed by Mohan Raja, where he starred opposite Nayanthara.

Following the positive reception from both critics and audiences, Sivakarthikeyan’s film Doctor was released on 9 October 2021. Controversy

During the success meet of his film Remo on 12 October 2016, Sivakarthikeyan disclosed that there were several obstacles created by individuals who tried to prevent the film’s release. A similar situation occurred with his film Rajini Murugan, which faced a delayed release in January 2016. Accusations were made against Sivakarthikeyan by K. E. Gnanavelraja of Studio Green, Madan of Escape Artists, and Vendhar Movies Madhan. They claimed that he had taken advance payments for acting in their films but failed to fulfill his commitments. While Gnanavel Raja had an agreement copy to support his claim, the other two did not. Sivakarthikeyan acknowledged receiving an advance from Gnanavel Raja but made no mention of the other two individuals. Actors Simbu and Vishal came forward to support Sivakarthikeyan in this matter.

In 2022, during a school event, Sivakarthikeyan made a joking remark about being unable to differentiate between Korean men and women, implying that they looked alike. His comments sparked backlash, with some accusing him of racism, while others found his remark cringeworthy. The incident was seen by some as an example of the cross-race effect, according to Simran Arora of Times Now.
