Sarath father V. S. R. Murthy was a civil servant, and his mother Kamala Kumari was a housewife. He has one younger brother named Ravi Kumar and one younger sister named Vijayalakshmi. Sathyam Babu Dixithulu’s father was a strict disciplinarian, who instilled in him the values of hard work and determination from a youthful age. Although his father was a civil servant, he was passionate about theater and encouraged Sathyam Babu Dixithulu to take an interest in acting. Her debut feature film was Abhi Manavati in 1975, but Nizhal Nijamagiradhu in 1977, directed by noted director Balachander, elevated her career in Tamil films. This film was later remade into Telugu as Idhi Katha Kadu, starring Sarath along with Kamal Hassan and Chiranjeev. Sarath attributes his success to Balachander, whom he considers his mentor.
