George Raymond Stevenson, the second of three sons of an Irish mother. His father was a pilot in the Royal Air Force. He moved to England with his family at the age of eight, settling first in the Laming ton area of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and later in Seaton Delaval.

Film
Ray began his acting career in 1998 in the British comedy drama film Theory of Flight, where he played Gigolo. In 2014, he starred in the movie Divergent, based on the first book in The Divergent Series. He reprised his role in the sequels, The Divergent Series: Insurgent, released in March 2015, and The Divergent Series: Allegiant, released in March 2016.
In 2019, the Stevenson S.S. was notified the main antagonist of RRR, a Telugu film directed by Rajamoulin and released in 2022. This was her debut in Indian cinema.

He appeared in several other TV series such as Some Kind of Life (1995), Peak Practice (1997), Red Cap (2003), Rome (2005-2007) and Black Sails (2016-2017).
On March 24, 2015, producers announced that Stevenson would join the cast of Starz’s Black Sails as Edward Teach.
At Star Wars Celebration 2023, it was announced that Stevenson will play the role of Dark Jedi Baylan Skoll in the upcoming series.

Stevenson’s stage work includes portraying the role of Jesus Christ in the York Mystery Plays in 2000 at York Minster. In 2001, he played the role of Roger in Kevin Elyot’s play Word of Mouth to mouth at the Albery Theatre in London alongside Lindsay Duncan and Michael Maloney. Perhaps his best-known role is as the Cardinal in John Webster’s The Duchess of Malfi with Janet McTeer at the Royal National Theaters in 2003.
