Sam Smith was born on 19 May 1992 in London, England to Kate Cassidy Frederick Smith. He has two siblings named Mabel Smith and Lily Smith.

He was bullied as a child for his breasts and had liposuction at age 12. As part of Youth Music Theater UK, Smith appeared in the group’s 2007 production of Oh! Carol, is a musical with music by Neil Sedaka.

Before getting into music, he was in a big band. In October 2017, Smith came out as genderqueer, saying “I feel just as much a woman as I am a man” and talked about a period in his youth when he “didn’t own a piece of male clothing and would wear full makeup while attending school”.

In September 2019, he came out as non-binary and changed his preferred gender pronouns to they/them, stating, “After a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out…”

Smith released two singles before 2010, 2008’s “Bad Day All Week” and 2009’s “When It’s all right”.
