Alice Schwarzer accuses the West of “fraud against Russia”

The controversial publicist Alice Schwarzer has accused Ukraine’s western allies of “fraud against Russia”. With a view to the 2015 Minsk agreement to settle the fighting in eastern Ukraine, also known as Minsk II, the West did not pursue a ceasefire, but only wanted to give Ukraine time to arm itself for a war against Russia.

“Until recently, I thought that one of Ms Merkel’s greatest achievements was getting the Minsk Agreement together with the French,” Schwarzer said in an argument with an editor of “Welt ” . She believed that a ceasefire was to be reached with this agreement.

The Minsk Agreement, negotiated by former Chancellor Angela Merkel, then French President François Hollande, and the Presidents of Ukraine and Russia, Petro Poroshenko and Vladimir Putin, was intended to implement the agreements of the Minsk Protocol signed in 2014. These included, among other things, a ceasefire and the withdrawal of heavy weapons.

“Suddenly, however, Angela Merkel claims that Minsk was only closed from the start to give Ukraine time to upgrade,” said the 80-year-old, referring to an interview that Angela Merkel gave to “Die Zeit” in December. In it, the former chancellor said: “The 2014 Minsk Agreement was an attempt to give Ukraine time. She also used this time to become stronger, as you can see today.” Russian President Vladimir Putin was also “disappointed” with Merkel’s statements. “Apparently, the West was only concerned with giving Ukraine space to rearm and train its army,” Schwarzer alleged to the “Welt”. “I also call that a scam, a scam against Russia.”
