Adjoa Andoh was born on 14 January 1963 in Clifton, Bristol, United Kingdom to a Ghanaian father and an English mother. Her mother was a teacher and her father was a journalist and musician. She has an elder brother named Yeofi.

Andoh grew up in Wickwar, Gloucestershire, where her family moved after her father got a job at British Aerospace. In October 2009, Andoh was licensed as a lay preacher in the Church of England.

Andoh met her husband Howard Cunnell in 1994 when she took over a bookshop in Battersea Arts Centre, where Andoh’s Wild Iris theater group was based. They have been together since late 1995 and got married in 2001. They have two children together (born in 1996 and 1997). Andoh also has a daughter from a previous relationship (b. 1985). Her children’s names are Jesse and Daisy and Liam (trans male).
