Adjoa Andoh was born on 14 January 1963 in Clifton, Bristol, United Kingdom to a Ghanaian father and an English mother. Her mother was a teacher and her father was a journalist and musician. She has an elder brother named Yeofi.
Andoh grew up in Wickwar, Gloucestershire, where her family moved after her father got a job at British Aerospace. In October 2009, Andoh was licensed as a lay preacher in the Church of England.

Andoh was a member of the BBC Radio Drama Company. Her television series include Casualty (she played Colette Griffiths (as Kierney) from 2000 to 2003), Jonathan Creek, EastEnders (in which she played jazz singer Karen, Rachel Kominski in Rent in 1991), and The Tomorrow People (in which she played Amanda).
She appeared in Doctor Who several times: in 2006 as Nurse Jat in episode 2 of The New Earth and as Nurse Albertine in the audio drama Year of the Pig. In 2007, she appeared in several episodes of the third series (“Smith and Jones”, “The Lazarus Experiment”, “42”, “The Sound of Drums” and “The Last Time Lords Time Lords”) as mother Francine Jones. by Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman). Andoh met her husband Howard Cunnell in 1994 when she took over a bookshop in Battersea Arts Centre, where Andoh’s Wild Iris theater group was based. They have been together since late 1995 and got married in 2001. They have two children together (born in 1996 and 1997). Andoh also has a daughter from a previous relationship (b. 1985). Her children’s names are Jesse and Daisy and Liam (trans male).
