Sushma grew up in a family of teachers. Her grandfather was also a teacher. She has an elder sister, Pallavi Bakhshi, and a younger brother Bhakti Verma.
Sushma used to play multiple sports – volleyball, handball, and badminton. she has been a state-level player in these games.
In 2009, she was a student of the first batch of the Indian residential academy in Himachal Pradesh.

She began her career by playing for the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association. In 2011, under her captaincy, the Himachal team was the runners-up at the Under-19 All-India women’s tournament. She is the first cricketer from Himachal Pradesh, male or female, to represent India in international cricket.
Later, she began playing for Railways, India Women Green, and India Women Blue at the domestic level.
On 5th April 2013, she made her T20I debut for India against Bangladesh. On 16th November 2014, she made her Test debut for India against South Africa. On 24th November 2014, she made her ODI debut for India against South Africa.
She was part of the Indian team to reach the final of the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup where the team lost to England by nine runs.
After the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup, the then-chief minister of Himachal Pradesh Virbhadra Singh offered her the post of Deputy Superintendent of Police.
In 2019, she played for Velocity in the 2019 Women’s T20 Challenge.
In 2023, she was bought by the Gujarat Giants in the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction at the price of ₹60 lakhs.
