Senior Congress leader and former chief minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday got a landslide victory in the Varuna constituency, defeating his nearest rival by a margin of 46,006 votes and entering the Karnataka Assembly in 2023 for the ninth time.
Siddaramaiah Personal Life
Siddaramaiah was born 3 August 1947 (75 years old as of 2023) is an Indian politician who was the 22nd Chief Minister of Karnataka served from 13 May 2013 to 17 May 2018, being only the second person to hold that office for a full-term. In the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, he has represented the Badami Assembly constituency since 2018, Varuna Assembly constituency from 2008 to 2018 and in 2023, and Chamundeshwari Assembly constituency from 2004 to 2007.
He is a member of the Congress Working Committee and a member of the Indian National Congress party. Siddaramaiah was a member of several Janata Parivar factions.
Education
He had no formal schooling until he was ten but went on to do his B.Sc. and LL.B. from Mysore University. He is the second among five siblings, and he belongs to Kuruba Gowda community.
Siddaramaiah was a junior under a lawyer, Chikkaboraiah, in Mysore and later taught law for some time.
Family
He was born to Siddarame Gowda and Boramma in a remote village called Siddaramanahundi in Varuna Hobli near T. Narasipura of Mysore district in a farming family.

Siddaramaiah is mononymous. Siddaramaiah is married to Parvathi and had two sons. Rakesh, his elder son and heir to his father’s political legacy, died of multiple organ failure in 2016 at the age of 38. Yathindra, the surviving son, won the 2018 Legislative Assembly elections from Varuna in Mysuru, the seat his father once held.
Political career
Siddaramaiah’s political career began when Nanjunda Swamy, a lawyer in Mysore, spotted him at the district courts as a law graduate. He was elected to the Mysore Taluka after being asked to run. In 1983, he was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly on a Bharatiya Lok Dal ticket from Chamundeshwari constituency.
In 2005, Siddaramaiah was expelled from JD(S) after differences with H. D. Deve Gowda. He wanted to form a regional party ABPJD in the state after breaking free from the JD(S) but did not do so as the earlier regional parties formed in Karnataka failed.
He won the 2013 election from the same constituency (Varuna) on 8 May 2013 and was reelected for the 7th time. He was elected as the leader of the Congress legislative party in the Karnataka assembly on 10 May 2013.
He was the chairman of coordination committee that coordinated the congress-JDS coalition govt under H. D Kumarswamy. After the resignation of 17 MLAs, leading to the downfall of the coalition government, Siddaramaiah took the leadership of the upcoming by-elections in Karnataka.
Chief Minister of Karnataka
Siddaramaiah was elected as the chief minister after the Congress approved a secret ballot to elect a new chief minister. He led the Indian National Congress to victory, winning an absolute majority of 122 out of 224 seats in the 2013 Legislative Assembly elections.
On 15 May 2018, he resigned as the Chief Minister of Karnataka, honoring the results of the 2018 Karnataka Legislative Assembly elections. He also became the first Chief Minister of Karnataka to serve for full five years in 40 years and the second in the history of the southern state after Devaraj Ursi. He also holds the record of presenting the state budget 13 times as the Finance Minister of the Government of Karnataka.
