Riley began swimming at a very young age. After joining the university, she swam for the University of Kentucky. In 2022, she ended her college career as ‘one of the most decorated swimmers in program history’.
She became a 12-time NCAA All-American swimmer and a five-time SEC champion. Competing against transgender University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas at the NCAA Championships in March 2022, she said that competing against Thomas — who competed in men’s competition until 2019 — felt like she was going into the race with her hands tied behind her back.

In an interview, Riley said: “I thought surely there would be someone, whether that be a coach, or another swimmer, or someone within the NCAA, I thought surely someone would stick up for us. That’s when I realized it’s my duty as s female athlete who experienced this injustice to really use my voice and my platform to advocate for those female athletes who are emotionally blackmailed and gaslit into silence.”
When asked why she spoke now, Riley said: “Honestly, I’m speaking out now because I was that person who was looking for someone else to look up to for hope and encouragement when I was on the verge of speaking out. When we weren’t seeing that, it kind of hit me. If we, as women, were not willing to stick up for ourselves, how can we expect someone else to?”
Riley Gaines Ambushed
On 6th April 2023, she went to the university to speak at a Turning Point USA (TPUSA) event at the university but was unable to continue when protesters entered the venue and chased her away. Riley filmed herself being ambushed by students at San Francisco State University who support trans rights and are part of the LGBTQ community or allies. The swimmer claimed to have been hit twice by the man wearing the dress. Her husband, Louis Barker, said he spoke to her briefly as she locked herself in her room for nearly three hours to escape the protesters. On April 7, 2023, Gaines shared a video on Twitter in which she called the university an asylum and said it was run by students she called prisoners.
