Phillip Schofield grew up in New quay, Cornwall, where he attended Trenance Infant School and Newquay Tretherras School. When he was 15, his first foray into the media was a Sunday show on Hospital Radio, Plymouth. At the age of 17, he started working as a booking clerk at the BBC, but later moved with his family to New Zealand, where he got television and radio work. Returning to Britain in 1985, he introduced links with the Gordon doll.
At the age of 19, Schofield moved with his family to New Zealand, where he made his television debut on the youth music show Shazam! February 23, 1982.
Between 2002 and 2006, he co-hosted the BBC quiz show Test the Nation with Anne Robinson. In July 2006, he signed an exclusive two-year contract with ITV, reported to have been worth £5 million.
From 2009 until 2015, he presented the prime time game show The Cube
He co-hosted the Christmas charity show Text Santa on ITV with Bleakley in 2011, 2014 and 2015 and Willoughby in 2012 and 2013.

Phillip Schofield came out as gay in a statement posted to his Instagram story, On 7 February 2020, followed by an interview with This Morning, stating that “with the strength and support of my wife and daughter, I have come to terms with the fact that I am gay.” He reportedly thought he was bisexual when he married his wife in 1993, but later realized he was gay.
On May 2023 Schofield admitted to an affair with a “younger” male staff member who he met when the man was a teen. And Schofield left ITV forever.
