Peter Maffay is a Romanian-born German musician, singer, and composer. On the Spanish island of Majorca, he founded a ranch where traumatized children from all over the world can spend a free two-week vacation to help them overcome their problems.

Peter Maffay was born on 30th August 1949 in Brașov, Romania to a German father Wilhelm Makkay, and a mother Augustine Makkay. In 1963, at the age of 14, he moved to West Germany along with his family.

He started his first band at the age of 14 in 1963. He used to work for Chemigraphics, an art manufacturer, He also worked in clubs, where he distributed his music.

He is a peace activist and in 2005 spoke for the German International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan. Maffay also donates to projects for traumatized and abused children. Maffay’s career began with the release of his first single “Du” (“You”). It was his greatest success in Germany in 1970 and brought him immediate fame. He became a big music star in Germany with the 1979 album Steppenwolf. The album sold 1.6 million copies, making it one of the best-selling albums at the time.

In 1980, the album Revanche (“Revenge”) broke his previous record and sold more than 2.1 million copies. Together with German singer-songwriter Johnny Tame, he formed the successful country rock duo Tame and Maffay in 1976. They released two albums and continued to work closely together until 1985. Maffay also created a series of fairy tales about a small green dragon named Tabaluga. The songs spread over five albums were also made into a musical. Maffay personally toured with Tabalu and Lili in Germany; later he released a live album, a DVD, and a live broadcast. The tour featured Maffay, Alexis, Nino de Angelo, Rufus Beck, and Carl Carlton among others.

In 1998, Maffay created the album “Begegnungen” in collaboration with international artists, including Israeli native singers and musicians. Another German artist, Julia Neigel, is one of the musicians she usually works with on lyrics and duets. He wrote two of her best singles, “Freiheit die ich meine” and “Siehst du die Sonne”, a cover of Michel Polnareff’s “La Poupée qui fait non”. Maffay also starred in two films directed by Peter Patzak – Lethal Obsession 1987 and Captive in Yemen 1999 – with music by Tony Carey. In addition, Maffay did a supporting role in 1998’s Polar Bear. Maffay received the Steiger Award on March 12, 2011. Maffay holds the German record for most popular albums, including 16 albums. In addition, all of his studio albums since 1979 have reached the top ten. He also holds the German record for most albums sold over a million copies (14 copies). His 2005 album Laut und Leise (“Loud and Quiet”) peaked at number 14. In total, Maffay has sold more than 40 million records, making him one of Germany’s best-selling artists.

Since 1980, each of his 13 tours (approximately every two years) has been the third most visited musical event in Germany, and nine of them topped the category. The first leg of his 2015 tour (19 Arena shows) sold out almost a year in advance. In 2022, Maffay was a judge on The Voice of Germany.

Carl Carlton was a permanent member of Maffay’s group. Bertram Engel (drums), Ken Taylor (bass), and Jean-Jacques Kravetz (piano) also worked with Maffay for many years. After a while, Kravetz brought his son Pascal Kravetz (guitar) with him. Frank Diez, a member of the Peter Maffay Band since 1974, left the group in 2004. So did Andreas Becker and some other members of the Maffay band continue with other projects. He worked with John Mayall and Chris Thompson. American keyboardist Tony Carey, who produced many of his records, was also part of his live band for many years. The newest member of the band is guitarist Peter Keller from Hamburg.
