Nina Derwael is a Belgian artistic gymnast. She is the first Belgian gymnast to win a medal at the World Championships, the first World Champion, and the first European Champion.

Nina Derwael was born on 26 March 2000 in Sint-Truiden, Limburg, Belgium to Nico Derwael, a former professional football player, and her mother, Marijke Lammens, who played handball and table tennis.
She started gymnastics at age 2, despite her gym’s policy said that children could only start at age 3.

Derwael made her international debut at the 2013 Elite Gym Massilia in Marseille, France, placing eighth in the all-around, with the Belgian team finishing seventh.
Derwael competed at the International Gymnix in Montreal, placing fifteenth in the all-around and eighth in the uneven bars final. At the Belgian Championships in July, she finished fifth overall. She next competed in friendlies against Romania and France, with Belgium’s junior team finishing second to Romania.
She was selected to compete in the European Junior Championships with Axelle Klinckaert, Rune Hermans, Jelle Beullens, and Cindy Vandenhole and they finished sixth in the team standings. Elite Gym Massilia won her bronze in the all-around after Daria Spiridonova and Giorgia Campana, and the Belgian team won bronze after Italy and Russia. She also placed fifth in the uneven bars and floor exercise finals. Her final competition of the season was the Top Gym Tournament in Charleroi, where she finished fourteenth in the all-around. In the final of the event, she won the silver medal on the uneven bars behind Angelina Melnikova and finished fifth in the floor exercise.
At the Belgian Championships, Derwael won a gold medal in the all-around, uneven bars, balance, and floor exercise, and silver in the vault. She won a gold medal in the all-around and helped the Belgian team finish second behind Germany in the Flanders Team Challenge. She competed at the European Summer Youth Olympic Festival with Axelle Klinckaert and Julie Meyers and they won silver behind Russia in the team event. Derwael finished fourth in the all-around final. In the competition finals, she won silver behind Daria Skrypnik on the uneven bars, finished fifth on the balance beam and won the bronze medal on the floor exercise.
Her last junior competition was at Elite Gym Massilia, where she placed fifth in the all-around and floor exercise and won the bronze medal in the balance beam behind Laura Jurca and Enus Mariani. In 2016, Derwael became the age limit for the international senior competition. She made her senior debut at the International Gymnast, where she won a team gold medal and finished seventh in the all-around. In the final of the event, she won the gold medal on the uneven bar and the silver medal on the balance beam.
In March, she broke her wrist practicing the balance kick and missed the Olympic trials. She returned to the European Championships and the Belgian team finished ninth in the qualifying round. The Belgian team competed in the Dutch championships and Derwael finished sixth in the all-around. In the competition final, she won the silver medal on the uneven bars behind Laura Waem and finished fifth in the floor exercise. She represented Belgium at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro with Senna Deriks, Rune Hermans, Gaëlle Mys, and Laura Waem, and they finished twelfth in the qualification round. Individually, Derwael placed twelfth on the uneven bars and was third reserve for the event final. She qualified for the all-around final, where she placed ninth with a total score of 56.299.
After the Olympics, she competed in the Joaquín Blume Memorial and won a gold medal in the all-around. Derwael competed in the French Top 12 Championship as a guest of Dunkerque Gym and helped the team finish fifth. She finished sixth in the all-around and tied with Alison Lepin for the uneven bars gold medal. At the European Championships in Cluj-Napoca, he finished seventh in the final. Later, in the uneven bars final, she became the first female Belgian gymnast to win a gold medal at the European Championships. Derwael won the Paris Challenge Cup gold medal on the uneven bars.
At the World Championships, she finished third on the uneven bars behind defending world champion Fan Yilin and Elena Eremina of Russia. This made her the first female Belgian gymnast to win a medal at the World Gymnastics Championships. At the European Championships, Derwael qualified second for the uneven bars final behind 2013 European runner-up Jonna Adlerteg of Sweden and was the first to qualify for the uneven bars final. She won the silver medal in the balance beam behind the reigning Olympic champion of the Netherlands, Sanne Wevers.
In the friendly match in Varsenare, she won the gold medal with the Belgian national team and in the multi-event. In March, Derwael competed at the World Championships in Doha, where she won a gold medal on the uneven bars and a silver medal on the balance beam. In October, Derwael competed in the World Championships in Stuttgart. During qualification, she helped Belgium finish tenth; although they did not qualify for the team final, they qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as a team.
Derwael became the fifth woman in the history of the World Championships to defend the unequal title after Max Gnauck (1981, 1983), Daniela Silivaș (1987, 1989), Svetlana Khorkina (1995, 1996, 1997, 1991, 2000). and Fanilin. (2015, 2017). In February 2020, it was announced that Derwael would compete at the 2020 Tokyo World Cup.
