Karen Gillan was born on 28 November 1987 in Inverness, Scotland to Raymond John Gillan and Marie Peterson Gillan. Although she comes from a Catholic background, she says she is not baptized and does not practice that religion.

Gillan’s early television acting career included guest appearances on numerous television shows and her first role was in an episode of the ITV crime drama Rebus, which forced her to leave school.
