Karen Gillan is a Scottish-American film producer, voice artist, and actress.  In May 2013, Gillan was cast in the Marvel superhero science fiction film Guardians of the Galaxy which was released in August 2014. She shaved her head bald for the role, and Marvel modified the wig Gillan wore in the Selfie production.

Karen Gillan was born on 28 November 1987 in Inverness, Scotland to Raymond John Gillan and Marie Peterson Gillan. Although she comes from a Catholic background, she says she is not baptized and does not practice that religion.

At the age of 18, she moved to London, where she was scouted by a modeling agency. Before becoming an actress, she worked as a model and premiered at London Fashion Week in 2007.
