Ellie Goulding was born on 30th December 1986 in Hereford, England to Arthur, a funeral director, and Tracey Goulding. She has a brother, Alex, and two sisters, Isabel, and Jordan.
When Ellie was 5 years old, her parents got separated after which he had little contact with his family.
Ellie started playing the clarinet at age nine and learning guitar at age 14. In her final year of university, she met Jamie Lillywhite who later became her manager and introduced her to the producer Starsmith.

In November 2009, she released her debut single, Under the Sheets, which was released through the independent label Neon Gold Records.
In March 2010, she released her debut album Lights which reached No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 6 on the Irish Albums Chart. In August 2010, she released a second EP, Run into the Light. On 11th July 2010, she made her T in the Park debut.
In April 2011, she played live at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. On 7th April 2011, she made her American television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Followed by an appearance on Saturday Night Live. She collaborated with American electronic artist and producer Skrillex to produce Summit. In August 2011, Ellie performed at the V Festival followed by a performance at Lollapalooza in Chicago on 6 August 2011.
On 10th July 2012, Ellie released a cover of Active Child’s song Hanging On. In July 2012, Ellie announced her second album Halcyon whose lead single Anything Could Happen was released on 21 August. On 19 November 2012, the music video for Ellie’s second single from Halcyon, titled Figure 8 was released.
On 2 July 2013, she premiered a song titled You My Everything in the first episode of Skins Fire. On 9th September 2013, she released a music video for How Long Will I Love You for the film About Time.
In early 2015, she released the song Love Me Like You Do, which was featured in the soundtrack to the film Fifty Shades of Grey. In May 2015, she starred in the music video for Taylor Swift’s song Bad Blood. On 15th October 2015, she appeared on the Australian X Factor.
In November 2019, she released her rendition of Joni Mitchell’s Christmas song River, which topped the UK Singles Chart, and became her third UK number-one single and the last UK number-one song of the 2010s.
On 17th July 2020, she released her fourth studio album, Brightest Blue. The album debuted at the top of the UK Album Chart and became her third album to do so, as well as at No. 2 in Scotland.
On 3rd February 2023, she released her fifth studio album Higher Than Heaven.

In 2010, she began dating Greg James, a radio DJ, and their relationship lasted till 2012. In the same year, she began dating DJ Skrillex but their relationship did not last due to the long-distance nature of the relationship. From 2014 to 2016, she dated Dougie Poynter.
On 7th August 2018, she along with her boyfriend Caspar Jopling announced their engagement. On 31st August 2019, the couple got married. In April 2021, the couple welcomed their first son Arthur Ever Winter Jopling.
