Mulvaney’s first major role was as Elder White in the musical The Book of Mormon after graduating from college. Other roles included How the Grinch Stole Christmas! at the Old Globe Theatre; 8: Play at Birch North Park Theatre; Next to Normal at Arts Off Broadway; Legally Blonde; Spring Awakening; Hello Hello Birdie; and High School Musical ACT in San Diego. In October 2022, Mulvaney appeared on cosmetics brand Ulta Beauty’s podcast with genderfluid hairstylist David Lopez, discussing her childhood, coming out as transgender, and transitioning. According to Forbes writer Marisa Dellatto, the video led to the hashtag #BoycottUlta appearing in Twitter’s “Trending Topics” section, and “some called Mulvaney’s claims that he could live happily as a woman misogynistic, and others called him a bully.”

Later in October, Mulvaney met with President Joe Biden at the online news magazine NowThis News’ “Presidential Forum”. When Mulvaney asked about recent laws limiting the warm treatment of transgender youth by Republican-led lawmakers, Biden described them as “egregious” and “immoral”. According to NBC News, after meeting with Biden, Mulvaney became the target of a “campaign of vitriol” by “right-wing activists”. Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn shared a tweet in which she included a TikTok video created by Mulvaney and said, “Dylan Mulvaney, Joe Biden, and the radical leftist lunatics want to normalize this absurdity.” Media Caitlyn Jenner, who is also a transgender woman, wrote on Twitter that he agreed with Blackburn’s remarks and called Mulvaney’s video “absurd”. Several days later, Mulvaney posted a TikTok response video to Jenner on Day 233 of her Days of Girlhood series with the written message, “To my followers, please don’t send her any hate.” In the video, Mulvaney was direct. addressed the misogyny of Jenner and Jenner’s comments about her body, as well as what Mulvaney learned from the experience.

In December 2022, Mulvaney confirmed on Instagram that she had undergone facial feminization surgery. She posted a photo of her face on Instagram on January 27 and made her red-carpet debut at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards on February 5, 2023. At the end of February, she accepted the Queerties Breakthrough Award in Hollywood.

Mulvaney hosted a live broadcast at the Rainbow Room in midtown Manhattan on March 13, 2023, one year after he started the Days of Girlhood TikTok video series called Dylan Mulvaney’s Day 365 Live! According to the Los Angeles Times, the appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show came on the day Mulvaney spoke to Barrymore about “dealing with online hate” that resulted in a “cyber-hate attack” against Barrymore.

It remains unclear how much money Mulvaney was paid for the posts, but according to insiders, she could earn more than $50,000 per paid post.
