She completed high school ahead of schedule and attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. While studying there, Evans landed minor roles in the 1978 Brian De Palma film The Fury and the miniseries The Awakening Land. Her breakthrough came when casting director Mary Jo Slater secured her the role of Tina Clayton on the ABC soap opera One Life to Live, which she portrayed until 1981. Following that, she portrayed Patty Williams on The Young and the Restless from 1983 to 1984.

Evans returned to One Life to Live in 1985 and played a significant role in revitalizing the series. This led to her popularity reaching new heights, and she received a Daytime Emmy Award nomination in 1988 for her portrayal. Evans also graced the cover of Soap Opera Digest multiple times between 1986 and 1990.

In 1990, Evans made a sudden departure from One Life to Live, seeking refuge from a persistent stalker who had even broken into the ABC studios with the intention of harming her. The incident was downplayed in the media at the time. Evans revealed in a 2005 episode of 48 Hours that the murder of her co-star Rebecca Schaeffer by her own stalker in 1989 played a role in her decision to leave the show.

During the 1990s, Evans appeared in two feature films, A Low Down Dirty Shame (1994) and Ice Cream Man (1995). She made a television comeback in 1999, portraying Tawny, Amber Moore’s mother, on The Bold and the Beautiful until 2000. In the same year, she joined the cast of Passions as Rebecca Hotchkiss Crane, a role she played until the series’ final episode. There were ongoing rumors about Evans reprising her role as Tina on One Life to Live during her recurring status on Passions.
