Amy Dowden is a Welsh professional dancer and Spanish dancer from Caerphilly, Wales. Amy has, revealed she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Best known for her appearances on the BBC One television show Strictly Come Dancing. Dowden joined the series in 2017, and in 2019, she was a finalist in the seventeenth series with TV presenter Karim Zeroual.

Career
Dowden began dancing at the age of eight and quickly developed a passion for it. She began competing in local competitions and soon became a rising star in the world of ballroom dancing. Her talent and dedication have led her to win many awards and accolades in both ballroom and Latin American dance styles.
In 2015, Dowden appeared on the British television show Strictly Come Dancing, the British version of Dancing with the Stars. She was cast as one of the professional dancers in the show’s 13th season and later became a regular cast member. He and partner Ben Jones became British Open Latin Dance Champions in 2017, the pair becoming the first all-British couple to win the title in over 30 years. Other successes include being crowned British Dance Federation Champion, English Closed Champion and Welsh Closed and Open Champions.

In 2020, a documentary about her condition won a BAFTA Cymru award and Rishi Sunak received a Points of Light award for raising awareness of Crohn’s disease. Diagnosed Breast Cancer
Amy Dowden reveals she was diagnosed with breast cancer aged 32 after discovering a lump the day before her honeymoon – and admits she doesn’t know if she can return to the BBC dance show.: on her Instagram she wrote “Hello everyone, I have some news that is not easy to share. I have just been diagnosed with breast cancer, but I am determined to be back on the dance floor before you know it. Wales loves Amy.
The dancer has battled the intestinal disease Crohn’s disease since childhood and said she has already experienced “quite a lot” of health problems in her life.
She told Hello! Magazine: ‘You just don’t ever think it’s going to happen to you. I hadn’t thought it was possible to get breast cancer at my age. My mum has had breast cancer, but she had it at a later age, in her 50s.’
Amy said it was taking part in the CoppaTrek! Walk last June in support of breast health awareness charity CoppaFeel! That led her to discover her own cancer.
She realized that she doesn’t ‘check her breasts’ and then made a conscious effort to check herself, saying CoppaFeel! Has ‘potentially saved her life’.
‘I don’t know how long this lump could have been there before I would have noticed and done something about it,’ she added.
Amy said she found a lump in her right breast in April, a day before she and her husband flew to the Maldives for a belated honeymoon after their wedding last July.
The dancer said she was ‘in shock’ and decided to keep an eye on the lump, before going to the doctor when the lump grew on her return home.
She was immediately sent for an emergency referral, where she was told the lump looked ‘suspicious’ and to ‘prepare for the worst’.
In May 2023, Dowden announced she had been diagnosed with grade III breast cancer.
