Albin Kurti is a Kosovar Albanian politician and activist, serving as the prime minister of Kosovo. In 1997, he became the vice president of the University of Pristina student union and a main organizer of non-violent demonstrations in 1997 and 1998.
Albin Kurti Personal Life
He was born on 24th March 1975 in Pristina, Yugoslavia, now Kosovo to Zaim Kurti, an engineer, and her mother’s name is unavailable, she worked as an elementary school teacher in Pristina.
Albin’s father was from an Albanian family from the village of Sukobin in Ulcinj Municipality, Montenegro. In order to search for employment, his family moved to Pristina.
Albin Kurti Career
In 1997, he became one of the leaders of the student protests in Kosovo, against the occupation of the university campus by the Yugoslav police. He was also an activist for the Action for Kosovo Network (AKN) and joined the movement whose mission focused on human rights and social justice, education, culture, and art.
In July 1998, he became a member of the Kosovo Liberation Army as an assistant to the political representative Adem Demaçi.
In 2010, he joined the political spectrum of Kosovo. He became the candidate for Prime Minister, through Vetëvendosje. During the 2014 elections, he again stood for Prime Minister but again lost the elections.
On 3rd January 2018, he was prisoned for 1 year and 6 months on probation for his role in setting off the tear gas in 2015.
On 3rd February 2020, he was selected as the Prime Minister after Ramush Haradinaj resigned in July 2019.
On 26th January 2021, he was barred from running in the 2021 Kosovan parliamentary election by Kosovo’s election complaints panel, as he had been convicted of a crime less than three years prior to the election.
On 22nd March 2021, he as elected Prime Minister of Kosovo for a second time.

He is married to Rita Augestad Knudsen. She is from Norway. She is a senior researcher at NUPI and a member of the security and defense research group. She is also the managing director of a C-REX-affiliated consortium for terrorism and international crime research. The couple together has a daughter named Lea.
