Personal Life
Family
Turner was, the youngest daughter of Floyd Richard Brock and his wife Zelma Priscilla (née Callie). The family lived in a rural, unincorporated community near Nutbush, Tennessee. There, her father worked as a tenant supervisor at the Poindexter farm off Highway 180. She later recalled picking cotton with her family when she was young.
Sibling
Bullock had two older sisters, Evelyn Juanita Currie, and songwriter Ruby Alline Bullock. He was also the cousin of bluesman Eugene Bridges. As young children, the three sisters were separated when their parents moved to Knoxville, Tennessee during World War II to work in the defence establishment. Bullock went to stay with her strict religious grandparents, Alex, and Roxanna Bullock, who were deacons and deacons at Woodlawn Missionary Baptist Church. After the war, the sisters reunited with their parents and moved with them to Knoxville.
Early life
As a young girl, Bullock sang Nutbush in the Spring Hill Baptist Church choir. When he was 11 years old, his mother, Zelma, ran away without warning and in 1950 looked for St. Moving to Louis, in freedom from an abusive relationship with Floyd. Two years after his mother left the family, his father married another woman and moved to Detroit in 1952. Bullock and her sister were sent to live with their maternal grandmother, Georgeanna Currie, in Brownsville, Tennessee. She claimed in her autobiography I, Tina that her parents did not love her and that she was not wanted. Zelma planned to leave Floyd but became pregnant.” She was a very young woman who didn’t want another child,” Turner recalled. As a teenager, Bullock worked as a housekeeper for the Henderson family. He was in the Henderson house when he was told that his half-sister Evelyn had died in a car accident along with his cousins Margaret and Vela Evans. A self-confessed tomboy, Bullock joined both the cheerleading squad and the women’s basketball team at Carver High School in Brownsville and “socialized every chance she got.”
Husband
Ike Turner
Turner compared his early relationship with Ike Turner to “a brother and sister from another life.” They were platonic friends from meeting in 1957 to 1960. Their relationship began when Ike was with his live-in girlfriend. Lorraine Taylor. They had sex when he went to sleep with her when another musician threatened to enter her room.
After recording “A Fool in Love,” Turner told Ike that she did not want to continue their relationship; she responded by hitting him on the head with a wooden shoe stretcher. Turner recalled that the incident was the first time he was “scared” by her, but she decided to stay with him because he “really cared about her”. After the birth of their son Ronnie in October 1960, they moved to Los Angeles in 1962 and married in Tijuana. On July 27, Turner filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences. Her divorce petition sought alimony of $4,000 per month, alimony of $1,000 per month, and custody of sons Craig and Ronnie. The divorce was finalized on 29 March 1978. In the final divorce settlement, Turner accepted responsibility for the late concert dates and the IRS back pay. Turner accused Turner of physical abuse in her 1986 memoir” I, Tina”. This abusive marriage was later portrayed in the 1993 film “Where Is Love,” starring Angela Bassett. The couple divorced in 1978.
Erwin Bach
The “Queen of Rock” met the former music executive ten years after she fled her abusive first husband and music partner Ike Turner. Tina and Bach met at the Düsseldorf airport in 1985. Bach was dispatched by EMI to greet the singers upon their arrival. In the 2021 HBO documentary Tina, she said the two had an instant connection from the moment their eyes met. Turner and Bach dated for 27 years and were married for 10 years until she died on May 24, 2023, after a long illness. During their decade-long relationship, the couple shared many sweet moments and milestones together. Turner also credited Bach with teaching him how to “love without giving up who I am.” When Turner and Bach met, he was 30 years old at the time. Turner was 47. After 27 years together, the pair tied the knot in a civil ceremony in Switzerland. Turner was 73 years old at the time.
Bach then donated his kidney to his wife. The surgery, which took place in April 2017, was largely successful, although Turner still had mild symptoms.
children
with Ike Turner, Tina has four children. (Turner and Ike’s oldest son, Craig, died by suicide in 2018, and their youngest, Ronnie, just died of complications from colon cancer in December 2022.)
Tina is survived by her adopted sons, Ike Jr., and Michael Turner. Tina and Ike’s other children usually stayed out of the public eye.
Health
In her 2018 memoir, My Love Story, Turner revealed that she had life-threatening illnesses. Three weeks after her wedding to Erwin Bach in 2013, she suffered a stroke and had to learn to walk again. He was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2016. Turner used homeopathic remedies to treat high blood pressure, which led to kidney damage and eventual kidney failure. His chances of getting a kidney were slim, so he was advised to start dialysis. He considered assisted suicide and joined Exodus, but Bach offered to donate a kidney for transplantation. On April 7, 2017, Turner underwent kidney transplant surgery.
