Gauri Sawant is a renowned social activist and transgender rights advocate in India. She is best known for her efforts to promote the rights and dignity of the transgender community.
She was born on 22nd July 1980 in Mumbai, India as Ganesh Suresh Sawant to Suresh Sawant, and his wife. Gauri’s mother died when Gauri was 7 years old.
In 2000, she founded the Sakhi Char Chowghi Trust. The NGO promotes safe sex and provides counseling to transgender people.
In 2014, she filed a petition in the Supreme Court for the adoption rights of transgender people and became the first transgender person to file a petition in the Supreme Court of India
In 2008, Gauri adopted a girl named Gayatri age 4 when her biological mother, a sex worker who had died from AIDS.
