Kim Petras is an American-based German singer and songwriter. On October 1, 2018, Petras released the Halloween-themed extended play Turn Off the Light, Vol. 1. In April 2023, she collaborated with rapper Nicki Minaj on the song “Alone”.

Kim Petras Personal Life

Kim Petras was born on 27 August 1992 in Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany to Lutz Petras an architect, and Konni Petras, a choreographer & artist. She has an elder sister named Sina Petras, who is also a singer.

In 2006, the then 13-year-old Petras appeared on German television’s current affairs program where she discussed her medical gender reassignment. At the age of 14, she appeared in a documentary and talk show to get permission for early gender confirmation surgery at the age of 16, before she turns 18 in Germany. These appearances led to international media coverage of her transition, promoting her as “the world’s youngest transgender”.

In September 2007, Petras was a model in a chain of hair salons in Germany. She was evaluated by Dr. Bernd Meyenburg, head of the psychiatric department of the Frankfurt Hospital, and was accepted for sex reassignment surgery at the age of 16. Between 2008 and 2009, Petras released a series of singles under Joyce Records: “Fade Away” (2008), “Last Forever”, “Die for You” and “Boomerang” (all 2009). In 2009, she appeared in the series Sobertruth “Taste” and 2011 in “Magnetic”. Later in 2011, Petras released her debut single One Piece of Tape under the Bionic Ballroom imprint. In 2013, Petras performed on two singles “Flight to Paris” and “Hearbeat” by German DJ Klaas. In the following years, Petras worked with such producers as The Stereotypes, C.J. Abraham, Stephen Dresser, Johan “Jones” Wetterberg, Edward Ellis, and Aaron Joseph in her musical career and released demos including “STFU” on her SoundCloud page.

In August 2017, Petras released her debut single “I Don’t Want It at All”. The song went viral on Spotify worldwide. An accompanying music video for the song premiered on Vevo in October and features a cameo appearance by Paris Hilton. That same month, Spotify selected her as one of four artists called RISE Artists.

On October 1, 2018, Petras released the Halloween-themed extended play Turn Off the Light, Vol. 1. The project was considered a departure from Petra’s typical sound and presents a guest appearance by horror lover character Elvira. Petras later announced that she plans to release a single for her debut album in a month. She was featured on the Cheat Codes track “Feeling of Falling” in November 2018. Petras has not publicly stated that she plans to release an album with any of her digital singles between 2016 and 2019, but has referred to the release period as Era 1. In March 2019, Petras headlined the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Grass, known as one of the world’s biggest pride festivals, and headlined by other notable acts such as Kylie Minogue, Cher, Dua Lipa, Kesha, Sam Smith., Veronica, and George Michael. Petras released her debut album Clarity on June 28, 2019. During May and June, Petras released one song a week before the release of the album.

In June, Petras began a 24-date “Broken Tour” in North America and Europe. Petras appeared on the covers of Galore and Notion magazines in the same month. The album was preceded by promotional singles including “All I Do Is Cry” and “Sweet Spot” and included the lead single “Icy” on its release date. In August, Petras announced the limited-edition vinyl edition of Turn Off the Light, Vol. 1 via Urban Outfitters. Petras announced that Turn Off the Light, Vol. 2 will be released exactly one year after the first part.

On October 1, 2019, Petra’s second studio album Turn Off the Light was released. The album contains all the tracks from Volume 1 plus nine new tracks, with a bonus track added a year later. On February 11, 2020, she released the single “Reminds Me”. That same month, she announced that she would support Camila Cabello on the European leg of The Romance Tour, which was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. On May 7, Petras released the single “Malibu” as the lead single from his upcoming album. A promotional appearance for the song on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and mapped in Great Britain. Petras later appeared on Kygo’s song “Broken Glass” from his Golden Hour album, which was released on May 29.

On October 23, Petras announced that Turn Off the Light, Vol. 3 will be released sometime in 2021 “when [she] can play it live”. She also released a new track, “Party Till I Die.” Kid Laroi covered Petra’s “Reminds Me” from her song “Reminds Me of You” featuring Juice Wrld, released on the first anniversary of her death. In August 2021, Petras signed to Republic Records and released “Future Starts Now” as the lead single from her upcoming major label debut studio album. Petras performed the song at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards on September 12, 2021, as the first trans artist to perform at the VMAs.

In November 2021, she performed two more singles from the upcoming album – “Coconuts” and “Hit It from the Back” when she performed at the 2021 MTV Europe Music Awards, becoming the first trans artist. to perform at the EMAs, a show deliberately arranged by MTV in Budapest as “an opportunity to show solidarity”  in protest against Hungary’s anti-LGBT law; also, Petras’ performance was intentionally dark and “sexy” On February 10, 2022, after teasing a few tracks on TikTok, Petras announced a surprise EP called Slut Pop, which was released the next day. On June 11, 2022, Petras performed at Los Angeles Pride with Christina Aguilera.

On September 22, 2022, Petras released “Unholy”, a collaboration with Sam Smith. The song went viral on TikTok, reaching number one in several countries upon its release, including Australia, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand. It was also her first career entry on the US Billboard Hot 100, later peaking at the top of the chart in October 2022. This made Petras the first openly transgender woman in history to have a chart-topping song, and Smith the first openly non-binary person to do so.

On February 5, 2023, Petras and Smith won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for Unholy. This made Petras the first openly transgender artist to win a Grammy in the main category and Smith the first non-binary artist to win a Grammy. In her acceptance speech, Petras thanked her mother, who she said “believed in me to be a girl and I wouldn’t be here without her and her support.” She also thanked Madonna and Sophie. In April 2023, she collaborated with rapper Nicki Minaj on the song “Alone”.
