Kim Petras Personal Life
Kim Petras was born on 27 August 1992 in Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany to Lutz Petras an architect, and Konni Petras, a choreographer & artist. She has an elder sister named Sina Petras, who is also a singer.
In 2006, the then 13-year-old Petras appeared on German television’s current affairs program where she discussed her medical gender reassignment. At the age of 14, she appeared in a documentary and talk show to get permission for early gender confirmation surgery at the age of 16, before she turns 18 in Germany. These appearances led to international media coverage of her transition, promoting her as “the world’s youngest transgender”.
In September 2007, Petras was a model in a chain of hair salons in Germany. She was evaluated by Dr. Bernd Meyenburg, head of the psychiatric department of the Frankfurt Hospital, and was accepted for sex reassignment surgery at the age of 16. Between 2008 and 2009, Petras released a series of singles under Joyce Records: “Fade Away” (2008), “Last Forever”, “Die for You” and “Boomerang” (all 2009). In 2009, she appeared in the series Sobertruth “Taste” and 2011 in “Magnetic”. Later in 2011, Petras released her debut single One Piece of Tape under the Bionic Ballroom imprint. In November 2021, she performed two more singles from the upcoming album – “Coconuts” and “Hit It from the Back” when she performed at the 2021 MTV Europe Music Awards, becoming the first trans artist. to perform at the EMAs, a show deliberately arranged by MTV in Budapest as “an opportunity to show solidarity” in protest against Hungary’s anti-LGBT law; also, Petras’ performance was intentionally dark and “sexy” On February 10, 2022, after teasing a few tracks on TikTok, Petras announced a surprise EP called Slut Pop, which was released the next day. On June 11, 2022, Petras performed at Los Angeles Pride with Christina Aguilera.
On September 22, 2022, Petras released “Unholy”, a collaboration with Sam Smith. The song went viral on TikTok, reaching number one in several countries upon its release, including Australia, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand. It was also her first career entry on the US Billboard Hot 100, later peaking at the top of the chart in October 2022. This made Petras the first openly transgender woman in history to have a chart-topping song, and Smith the first openly non-binary person to do so.
On February 5, 2023, Petras and Smith won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for Unholy. This made Petras the first openly transgender artist to win a Grammy in the main category and Smith the first non-binary artist to win a Grammy. In her acceptance speech, Petras thanked her mother, who she said “believed in me to be a girl and I wouldn’t be here without her and her support.” She also thanked Madonna and Sophie.
