Adele was born on 5 May 1988 in Tottenham, London, England to Penny Adkins, an English mother, and Marc Evans, a Welsh father. Evans left when Adele was 2 years old and was raised by her mother. Adele has a half-brother named Cameron Evans.

She started singing at the age of 4 and claims to be obsessed with voices. In 1997, 9-year-old Adele moved with her mother, who by then had found work as a furniture maker and organizer of adult education activities, to Brighton on the south coast of England.

Four months after graduating, Adele published two songs in the fourth issue of the online art publication PlatformsMagazine.com. She recorded a demo of three songs for a class project and gave it to a friend. A friend posted the demo on Myspace, where it did well and led to an invitation from XL Recordings boss Richard Russell. She doubted the offer was real because the only record company she knew was Virgin Records, and she brought a friend with her to the meeting. Nick Huggett (XL) recommended Adele to Jonathan Dickins in September management, and in June 2006 Dickins became her official representative. September was dominated by Jamie T at the time and proved to be a big draw for the British singer-songwriter, a huge Adele fan. Huggett then signed Adele to XL in September 2006. By the end of 2014, she had sold an estimated 40 million albums and 50 million singles worldwide.
