Gunther was born on 20 August 1987 in Vienna, Austria to a Catholic family. Gunther was encouraged by his parents to pursue a wrestling career. He was trained by Michael Kovac, Tatsuhito Takaiwa, and Tomohiro Ishii.
Gunther Career
On 4th May 2007, he made his Westside Xtreme Wrestling (wXw) debut. On October 2, 2010, in Oberhausen, Germany, he defeated Zack Saber Jr. to win the wXw Unified Wrestling World Championship. He lost the title to Daisuke Sekimoto on January 15, 2011, but later regained it on May 2, 2011, at the Big Japan Pro Wrestling card in Tokyo, Japan. He held the title for 383 days before losing it to El Generico on May 19, 2012. He teamed up with Zack Saber Jr. to win the wXW World Championship at the 2015 World Tag Team Tournament Finals on October 4, 2015, but relinquished the title at the wXW Fifteenth Anniversary Show on December 12, 2015, losing to Cerebrus (Ilya Dragunov and Robert Dreissker ).
On May 24, 2015, Walter debuted as Big Daddy Walter for Progress Wrestling at the 2015 Super Strong Style 16 tournament at the Electric Ballroom in London, losing to Rampage Brown in the first round. He defeated Matt Riddle to win the Progress Atlas Championship at 51: Screaming for Progress at the O2 Academy in Birmingham. During the 2019 edition of Super Strong Style 16, Walter Trent defeated Seven in a title and championship match to win Seven’s Progress Atlas Championship.
Walter made his Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG) debut at the 2017 Battle of Los Angeles tournament where eventual finalist Keith Lee was eliminated in the opening round. On April 21, 2018, Walter defeated champion Keith Lee and Jonah Rock in a three-way match to win the PWG World Championship. Walter later lost the title to Jeff Cobb on October 19.
On January 12, 2019, at NXT UK TakeOver: Blackpool, Walter made his WWE debut for the NXT UK brand, facing WWE United Kingdom Champion Pete Dunne following Dunne’s successful title defense. On the January 30, 2019 episode of NXT UK, Walter made his WWE in-ring debut against Jack Starz. He beat Starz in less than four minutes. At NXT TakeOver: New York, Walter defeated Dunne to win the WWE United Kingdom Championship, ending Dunne’s record reign of 685 days.
On April 8, 2020, episode of SmackDown, Gunther and Marcel Barthel (now Ludwig Kaiser) made their main roster debut. In his debut match, Gunther defeated Joe Alonzo in less than 3 minutes. On the May 27 episode of SmackDown, Gunther and Kaiser made their tag team debut, defeating Drew Gulak and Intercontinental Champion Ricochet. On the June 10 episode of SmackDown, Gunther defeated Ricochet to win the Intercontinental Championship, making him the first Austrian to win the title.
