Sanna Marin is a Finnish politician. She has been prime minister since 2019, SDP member of parliament since 2015, and SDP leader since 2020. At 34, she is the youngest to take office. The office in Finnish history and the fourth youngest head of state in the world after Dritan Abazović from Montenegro, Gabriel Boric from Chile, and Ibrahim Traoré from Burkina Faso.

Sanna Marin was born on 16 November 1985 in Helsinki, Finland. When Marin was very young, her parents got separated. Her father suffered was alcoholism and her family suffered from financial problems.

After her biological parents divorced, Marin was raised by her mother and her mother’s female partner. Marin describes herself as coming from a “rainbow family”, as she was raised by two female parents.

Marin was the first person in his family to go to university. While studying, she used to work in a bakery and as a cashier.

The BBC described Marin’s political career as “beginning at the age of 20”, after graduating from high school and joining a social democratic youth group. Marin joined the Social Democratic Youth Group in 2006 and was its first leader from 2010 to 2012. In 2008, she ran unsuccessfully for the Tampere city council elections, but ran again and was elected in the 2012 elections. She became the president of the city council in a few months and served from 2013 to 2017. In 2017, she was re-elected to the city council. She first rose to prominence after videos of controversial meetings she chaired were shared on YouTube. In 2014, Marin was elected as the second vice president of SDP. In 2015, she was elected to the parliament as a member of the Pirkanmaa electoral district. She was re-elected four years later.

On June 6, 2019, she became the Minister of Roads and Communications. In December 2019, the SDP nominated Marin Antti Rinne as the successor to the Prime Minister of Finland, but Rinne officially remained as party leader until June 2020. Marin narrowly won against Antti Lindtman. Most of the ministers in his five-party government are women, 19 of them at the time the government was formed. She is the third and longest-serving female head of government of Finland after Anneli Jäätteenmäki and Mari Kiviniem. When she was confirmed by parliament at the age of 34, she became Finland’s youngest-ever prime minister and the youngest sitting head of state until Sebastian Kurz regained the role in January 2020.

During the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Marin’s cabinet called for a state of emergency in Finland to mitigate the epidemic. When Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven could not attend the European Council meeting in October 2020 due to his mother’s funeral, Marin stepped in to represent Sweden. In return, Marin asked Löfven to represent Finland at the council meeting that month. Marin’s SDP took third place in the 2023 parliamentary elections. In March 2021, Marin condemned the persecution of ethnic Uighurs in China’s Xinjiang province. She emphasized that “business or economics is not a reason to ignore these atrocities”.

In her annual speech at the beginning of 2022, in response to Russia’s attack on the Russian-Ukrainian border, Marin stated that Finland has the right to join NATO if it wishes, and it should be considered. Part of the Russian media responded to that statement with the phrase: “Moscow was stabbed in the back”. On February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin gave the order to attack Ukraine. On February 25, a spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry threatened Finland and Sweden with “military and political consequences” if they tried to join NATO, which neither was actively seeking at the time. Both countries participated in the emergency NATO summit as members of NATO’s Partnership for Peace program and both condemned the attack and helped Ukraine.

In February, after Russia’s 2022 attack on Ukraine, Marin commented on Finland’s possible membership and stated: “Now it is also clear that the discussion on NATO membership is changing in Finland”, but stated that Finland’s NATO application would require a comprehensive political line and public support. In March 2022, she said that the EU must end its dependence on Russian oil, adding that “on the one hand we have these very severe economic sanctions and on the other hand we are financing Russia’s war by buying oil, natural gas and other fossil fuels from Russia.” On March 4, 2022, the President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö visited Washington to meet with President Joe Biden and several other American politicians and security personnel. Niinistö said in a press conference with the Finnish media that the presidents discussed Russia’s attack on Ukraine and its effects on the security of Europe and Finland. In addition, it was agreed to deepen security cooperation and bilateral relations between Finland and the United States.

On May 15, 2022, Niinistö and Marin announced that Finland would apply for NATO membership, and the parliament approved the proposal by a vote of 188:8 on May 17, 2022. Marin said she was surprised by Turkey’s opposition to Finland’s NATO membership. She said that her country does not want permanent NATO bases or nuclear weapons on its territory. On May 26, 2022, at the invitation of Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, Marin went to Kyiv, where she met with President Volodymyr Zelensky and visited the war-torn cities of Irpin and Bucha. On May 26, 2022, Marin also signed a bilateral framework agreement with the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, to build education in Ukraine. On May 31, she welcomed an agreement by all EU leaders to ban more than 90 percent of Russian oil imports by the end of the year and voted for it in the European Council.

In late November and early December 2022, Marin visited New Zealand and Australia, becoming the first Finnish prime minister to visit those two countries. She met with New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and discussed a range of topics, including bilateral trade relations, the global economic situation, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and climate change mitigation. On March 10, 2022, Marin said that Finland could discuss the transfer of F/A-18 Hornets to Ukraine in terms of international cooperation, training requirements, and Finland’s own security situation. President Sauli Niinistö denied the discussion on this topic. Defense Minister Antti Kaikkonen said that Hornets will be needed in the near future. Marin repeated the call to discuss fighter jets as the “next big thing” after main tanks, saying that heavier weapons are needed to defend Ukraine against Russia. She emphasized that Finland does not yet have a position on this matter.

On 2 April 2023, Marin conceded defeat to his center-right rivals, the coalition led by Petteri Orpo when his party came third in the 2023 parliamentary election behind Orpo’s NKP and the nationalist Finns led by Riikka Purra. Although his party fell to third place, the SDP was able to win three seats in the election and increase its overall vote share. Marin was re-elected with a Pirkanmaa district record of 35,623 votes. On April 5, Marin announced that she would resign from the position of SDP president at the party meeting to be held next fall.
