Harwell was a father to a son named Presley, who sadly lost his battle with acute lymphocytic leukemia in July 2001 when he was just six months old. In memory of his son, Harwell established a medical research fund bearing Presley’s name.

Greg Camp, along with Harwell, Kevin Coleman, and Paul De Lisle, co-founded Smash Mouth. Before this venture, Harwell had a background as a rapper in F.O.S. (Freedom of Speech). Their breakthrough came with the 1997 hit song “Walkin’ on the Sun,” marking their initial success. In addition to his music career, Harwell made appearances on various television and radio shows. He even had a cameo role in the 2001 film “Rat Race.” However, he was most renowned for the song “All Star.”

Harwell’s involvement extended to the 2013 South Korean-Chinese animated film “Pororo, The Racing Adventure,” where he performed two songs: “Beside Myself” and “Everything Just Crazy.”

On August 27, 2016, during a Smash Mouth performance in Urbana, Illinois, Harwell experienced a stage collapse and was subsequently transported to a hospital. The band completed the concert without him, with De Lisle taking over vocal duties.

Unfortunately, in October 2021, during a performance at a beer and wine festival at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Bethel, New York, Harwell’s behavior raised concerns. He appeared to be intoxicated, engaged in confrontations with the audience, and made gestures that resembled a Nazi salute. Following this incident, Harwell announced his retirement due to ongoing health issues.
