Through ALSTIN (Alternative Strategic Investments), it invests growth capital in emerging industries and future markets with outstanding innovation in areas such as the Internet, technology, and life sciences.

Carsten Maschmeyer was born on 8 May in Bremen, Germany to mother, Gertrud Maschmeyer. He grew up in Hildesheim, Lower Saxony.

Carsten has never seen his father. He used to live in an orphanage. When he was 40 years old, he met his one half-brother. During his teenage years, he was a successful athlete (middle-distance-runner).

He worked part-time in the sales department of a financial advisory firm (OVB Vermögensberatung) before becoming a full-time financial consultant in 1982 to finance his medical university courses in Hannover. He became the director of  Lower Saxony at a very young age and managed about 3,000 people. He worked at OVB until 1987. Carsten Maschmeyer is a reserve officer in the Joint Medical Service of the Bundeswehr.

In 1988, Carsten Maschmeyer established an independent financial advisor for private individuals by founding the financial group AWD (Allgemeiner Wirtschaftsdienst). His company grew rapidly and became the largest independent financial advisor in Europe. It went public in 2000, was listed on the M-DAX (member of the 100 listed companies), and expanded to 11 countries with approximately 11,000 employees. In 2007, it managed €15 for two million clients. In 2007, Switzerland’s largest life insurance company, Swiss Life, bought all of the company’s shares for 1.9 billion Swiss francs.


Maschmeyer currently has significant holdings in several companies. In a recent survey of Germany’s fastest-growing startups, his private equity fund is the only one that has invested in two of the top 10 companies. Maschmeyer is ranked 112,500 on the list of the richest Germans. His fortune is estimated at 1.2 billion euros.

HMNC Brain Health (HMNC) specializes in developing diagnostics and treatments for depression and anxiety disorders. Together with academic partners, the company leverages key research findings to create disruptive and commercialized concepts. The company was founded by Professor Florian Holsboer and Maschmeyer in December 2010 and is based in Munich, Bavaria. Both founders want to improve the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders.

Orderbird is a provider of POS systems for restaurants. The system is based on iPad technology and is used by more than 5,000 restaurants in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. In the fourth quarter of 2014, Concardis (MasterCard) joined as a new strategic investor. Orderbird was recognized by the Financial Times in 2012.
